For over a century, lead-acid batteries have dominated the vehicle start-stop market. However, lithium-ion batteries struggle with cold-start performance and cannot fully meet the high current demands of starting applications. In contrast, sodium-ion batteries deliver excellent low-temperature discharge characteristics — they can sustain a 10C pulse discharge even at –28°C, making them exceptionally reliable in cold environments. In terms of Cold Cranking Amps (CCA), sodium-ion batteries even outperform traditional lead-acid batteries.
Unlike lead-acid batteries, which must avoid over-discharge to prevent irreversible capacity loss, sodium-ion batteries are far more resilient. They can safely discharge down to 0 V without damaging the cells, and their capacity is fully restored upon recharging. Additionally, while lead-acid batteries require recharging every three months to maintain performance, sodium-ion batteries can remain in storage for up to 12 months without degradation.
